About LAI

The Later Abortion Initiative envisions a world where all people have access to high-quality, person-centered abortion care throughout pregnancy.

LAI works with our partners to expand access to later abortion through research, resources, and fostering collaboration.
We work with later abortion providers and allies to reduce barriers to abortion after 12 weeks’ gestation, with a focus on
the experiences and provision of care at or beyond 24 weeks.

To reach these goals, we:

  • Convene, build community, and foster partnerships among networks of providers, advocates, researchers, and key partners
  • Synthesize and disseminate tools, resources, and innovative service delivery techniques
  • Conduct policy-relevant research to fill critical gaps in evidence on later abortion
  • Contribute to evidence-based normative and culture shift around abortion care throughout pregnancy

Key activities and resources:

  • Up-to-date referral list of facilities that provide abortion 24+ weeks gestation
  • Curricula that help clinicians expand gestational age limits from 14-17 weeks and 24-26 weeks gestation
  • Later Abortion Network that brings together providers, advocates, lawyers, researchers, and other allies to discuss current issues related to later abortion – request to join the network here

History of LAI

The Later Abortion Initiative was launched by Ibis Reproductive Health in 2015 to promote a strategic vision for securing access to and provision of later abortion care in the United States. The Initiative grew out of the Second Trimester Abortion Access Network, that was created in 2008 in response to priorities identified at a national Summit hosted by Advancing Standards in Reproductive Health (ANSIRH) and sought to promote recommendations for advancing access to second-trimester abortion care in the United States.
