Second-trimester abortions are reported to make up approximately 7.1% of all abortions and are associated with increased morbidity. Dilation and evacuation is considered by many as the preferred route of termination in the second-trimester given its lower complication rate and cost effectiveness when compared to medical management. Furthermore, dilation and evacuation is generally the favored method in complex cases, such as in the presence of a placenta previa.
